Foreign Exchange Student Programs

Foreign Exchange Student Programs

Youth for Understanding, one of the world's oldest and largest exchange programs, is seeking families in the Montrose area who would be willing to host an international student for the coming school year. Janet Chapman, an educator and traveler herself, is looking for area families who would be interested in learning about another culture and sharing their own traditions with a teen from across the world. Ms. Chapman is part of YFU's more than 1500 local volunteer representatives who work with students and host families to help all involved have the best possible experience. Many years ago this writer participated in a YFU summer exchange student program, an experience that continues to be a lifetime high point.Students in the YFU program are from over 50 different countries, and come to their host home expecting to become part of the family, obey family rules and join in community activities. They bring their own spending money and have their own health insurance. Host families are able to choose a student they feel will be a good match for their home and lifestyle. Students and families often form lifelong friendships.
